Surgical Interventions
- Reduced operative time
- Less soft tissue and muscle damage
- Reduced blood loss
- Faster recovery time due to less tissue compromise
- Shortened hospital stay
- Smaller scar
- Less painful incisions
There are potential disadvantages to using a minimally invasive approach to spinal fusion which include:
Limited visual field with a chance of overlooking a problem
Limited access to more complex fusion considerations
Less apt to use bulkier instrumentation that may be required for a particular complicated fusion
Less control of blood loss during an operative procedure
Spinal Tumor Surgery:
Spinal tumors are relatively rare. When they are detected they can be treated with chemotherapy, radiation surgery, resection or a combination of these options. Surgical treatment often requires a laminectomy in order to access the tumor. Fusion is often required to stabilize the area due to the amount of supportive tissue that is often compromised by the tumor, biopsy and surgery.
